Margaret Thatcher Truisms from 1983

Margaret Thatcher spoke the truth and didn't worry about popularity polls. She understood the difference between popularity and leadership.

She believed in the three basics of (1) telling the truth, (2) hard work and (3) always paying our bills on time.

Here's a Notable & Quotable comment from her in 1983 which captures it all:

"The fact was that in this country, we had gone very much further toward socialism than most democratic countries in Europe—in the extent of the public sector, with the nationalized industries, and the amount of control, and to some extent in attitudes. We had to turn that back. In other words, the center is always the midway between two points, and the whole of the political debate had gone to the left, so the center had moved to the left and I think we are well on the way to pulling it back toward the center. But one wishes to go further. . . .

All of this is going much, much more towards the restoration of the personal responsibility, the independence, with every man a property owner, with every man a capitalist, getting away from the head of state having such a big sector, such a big voice. And, of course, running our financial affairs soundly so that the task of government is to create the climate in which enterprise can flourish."

Summing Up

Moving the "center back to the center" seems like the right idea to me.

And a most necessary one, too.

Attitudes influence behaviors.

In the U.S. and much of the rest of the world as well, we need an 'attitude adjustment,' both in the way our political 'leadership' behaves and among many of We the People as well.

The Iron Lady was right 20 years ago, and what she said still rings true today. Very much so.

That's my take.

Thanks. Bob.
